ULYSSES

"ULYSSES was written in 1833 by Alfred Lord Tennyson, Poet Laureate of Great Britain from 1850-1892. A poem about growing old, but written when Tennyson (1809 - 1892) was a young man in his earliy twenties. ULYSSES was written in the aftermath of a close friend's death as an attempt to come to terms with the loss. Taking inspiration from Homer's epics - The Iliad and The Odyssey - he adapts the story to fit his own themes. The tone of Ulysses is reflective, contemplative and hopeful. The speaker has come to the conclusion that to live a meaningful life, he has to reflect, and move on.
Sections of the poem have been chosen for this edition for their relevance today in 2020, a period in which we need a renewed sense of optimism and purpose.
The edition was made in collaboration with master printer Roberto Mazzotto of La Bottega del Tintoretto and Pierpaolo Pregnolato of Damocle Editions in Venice. I did it during a residency at the Emily Harvey Foundation from December 2019 - February 2020." (Morgan O'Hara)
