Hans-Peter Stark was born in Stuttgart in 1971 and lives in Berlin. He studied painting at the art academy in Mainz. In 1996, after a long period in New York Harlem with his German-American music band, he produced the work New York Graffiti. HP Stark is the band's guitarist. This theme is repeatedly reflected in his art and is an expression of his own attachment to music and Graffiti style.

In 1999, his debut solo exhibition was held at the Brigitte March iCA gallery with the title "Premiere".

New York Graffiti is Hans-Peter Stark's 5th solo exhibition at the Brigitte March iCA gallery and will run from 6 May to 17 June 2022.

The show concentrates on paintings of the 1990s to the early 2002 with the subjects of Graffiti and Urban Life. In the Hall (right) we show an installation of images that mixes both text and figurative elements. On canvas primed in black, white or grey, text and Graffiti are running in cutouts, diagonally across the paintings. The image extracts are from everyday New York life, for example: a car or a building in isolation, a row of three houses, each marked by three openings and a gable roof. Figurative representations such as a guitar player, a dog, a cactus and a bus are part of the vocabulary of the pictorial scenes. The verbal statements are among others: Song, Play, For My Girl, Proud, Present, Black, Canvas. The paintings echo the sounds of the metropolis and the artist's own personal leitmotif: music, guitar and songs.

The central presentation is of two large-format paintings, "u gOt mY NumBeR" (2000) and "wAiT A miNiT" (2001), with a pink-light blue and pink-black coloured background combining high-rise buildings and lyrics and respectively high-rise blocks, a city wolf and a yellow taxi.

In fact, the paintings in general use the language of city scenes and the sounds they make evoke the sound of ambulance sirens or the quiet of parked buses, or again, a song "For My Girl". As in the paintings of Cy Twombly, the written forms of the figures are archaeological memories and allusions to his own culture about Italy. In the paintings of Hans-Peter Stark, this archeology of memory is distinguished by the urbane Graffiti characters of the town scenes and in particular New York as an icon of the metropolis.

Hans-Peter Stark ist 1971 in Stuttgart geboren und lebt in Berlin. Er absolviert ein Studium der Malerei an der Kunsthochschule in Mainz. 1996, nach einem längeren Aufenthalt in New York Harlem, mit seiner deutsch-amerikanischen Musikband, entstehen die Arbeiten New York Graffiti. In der Band ist HP Stark Gitarrist. Dieses Motiv spiegelst sich immer wieder in seiner Malerei und ist Ausdruck seiner persönlichen Verbindung zur Musik und Graffiti-Kunst.

1999 findet in der galerie Brigitte March iCA seine erste Einzelausstellung statt mit dem Titel Premiere.

New York Graffiti ist die fünfte Einzelausstellung von Hans-Peter Stark in der Galerie Brigitte March iCA und läuft vom 6. Mai bis 17. Juni 2022.

Die Ausstellung konzentriert sich auf Malerei der 1990er Jahre bis Anfang 2002 mit den Themen Graffiti und urbanes Leben. In der Halle (rechts) zeigen wir eine Installation von Bildern, die Text und Bildkomponenten kombiniert. Auf schwarz, weiss oder grau grundierter Leinwand laufen Schrift und Graffiti ausschnitthaft, quer diagonal durch die Bilder. Die Bildausschnitte stammen aus dem new yorker Alltag wie zum Beispiel: ein isoliertes Auto oder Gebäude, eine Hausreihe aus drei Häusern, die jeweils durch drei Öffnungen und einem Satteldach gekennzeichnet sind. Figurative Darstellungen wie Gitarrenspieler, Hund, Kaktus und Bus gehören zum Vokabular der Bildszenerien. Die sprachlichen Äusserungen lauten u.a.: Song, Play, For My Girl, Proud, Present, Black, Canvas. Die Bilder evozieren die Klänge der Stadt und das persönliche Leitmotiv des Künstlers: Musik und Gitarre, Songs.

Zentral werden zwei grossformatige Bilder präsentiert, u gOt mY NumBeR (2000) und wAiT A miNiT (2001), mit rosa-hellblauer und rosa-schwarzer Farbgrundierung kombiniert mit Hochhäusern und Text bzw. Hochhäusern, Stadtwolf und gelbem Taxi.

Generell sprechen die Bilder die Sprache der urbanen Stadtszenen und deren Klänge evozieren Sirenen von Ambulanzen oder die Stille parkender Busse, oder wiederum ein song For My Girl. In Cy Twomblys Bildern finden wir archäologische Erinnerungsstücke von Schriftzeichen und Referenzen, die sich an seine Kultur von Italien anlehnen. In den Bildern von Hans-Peter Stark zeichnet sich diese Archäologie der Erinnerung durch die urbane Graffiti-Zeichen der Stadtszenerien und v.a. New York als Ikon der Grossstadt aus.
